You Are a Steward, Not an Owner

Everything we have belongs to God. We are managers, not masters.- Written by Teacher Mike.

  •  TWO WAYS TO VIEW MONEY

OWNER'S MINDSET

“Every dollar is mine to spend, save, or give as I please, according to my desires and immediate needs.”

STEWARD'S MINDSET

“Every dollar is a sacred trust from God, entrusted to me to manage with wisdom, integrity, and purpose.”

The Bible clearly teaches that we are stewards, not owners, of our possessions. Everything ultimately belongs to God. The question is never “what will I do with my money?” The question is “what does God want done with His resources that He has placed in my hands?”

  •  GOD'S OWNERSHIP OF ALL THINGS

The earth and everything in it — His.

Psalm 24:1–2

The earth and everything in it belong to the Lord because He is the Creator and sustainer of all.

Deut 10:14

Even the highest heavens and everything on earth are God’s possession, affirming His total sovereignty.

1 Chron 29:11

Greatness, power, and glory belong to God; all in heaven and earth is His, and He rules over everything.

Job 41:11 (AMP)

Everything under heaven belongs to God; no one can claim to have given to Him first.

Haggai 2:8

“The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,” declares the Lord — all wealth originates with Him.

Psalm 50:12 (NKJV)

“For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.” God is completely self-sufficient and depends on no one.

These passages leave no doubt: God owns everything, and we are entrusted to manage His resources faithfully.

  •  THE PARABLE OF THE TALENTS

Matthew 25:14–30 — What Faithful Stewardship Looks Like

A master entrusts money (“talents”) to three servants before leaving on a journey. Two invest and multiply the master’s resources. The third hides his out of fear. The outcome reveals God’s standard for every resource He places in our hands.

THE CHARACTERS

Master & Servants

The master represents Jesus. The servants represent believers. The journey symbolizes the time between Christ’s ascension and His return.

THE TALENTS

Significant Responsibility

In Jesus’ time, talents were large sums. They represent all God-given resources — skills, opportunities, time, and finances.

THE ACTIONS

Faith vs. Fear

The first two act in faith and diligence — growth and reward follow. The third acts from fear and mistrust — he buries what was given.

THE LESSON

God Holds Us Accountable

God rewards faithful, purposeful stewardship and holds us responsible for how we use what He entrusts to us — every resource, without exception.

The Outcome

FAITHFUL SERVANTS

“Well done, good and faithful servant” — invited to share in the master’s joy and given greater responsibility.

UNFAITHFUL SERVANT

Loses what was given, faces separation and regret — wasted opportunity and neglect of God’s calling.

  •  ACCOUNTABILITY & FAITHFULNESS

Luke 12:42–48

Much is expected from those who have received much. Greater privilege brings greater responsibility — for leaders and believers alike.

Exodus 20:3–4

God commands that nothing — money, possessions, or desires — take His place of highest honor in our lives.

Isaiah 44:9

Those who place their trust in worthless things gain nothing. True profit comes only from honoring God as the rightful owner of all.

SUMMARY THOUGHT

Everything we have — our money, time, skills, and opportunities — belongs to God. We are managers of His resources, called to handle them faithfully and for His glory, not our own comfort or pride.

The real question is never “what will I do with my money?”It’s “what does the Owner want done with what He’s placed in my hands?”

✝  CLOSING PRAYER

Lord, we confess that we have often lived as owners rather than stewards. We have treated Your resources as our own — spending them on our comfort, hoarding them out of fear, and neglecting to ask what You intended for what You placed in our hands.

Forgive us for the times we buried our talents rather than invested them. For the times we let anxiety about the future paralyze generosity in the present. For the times we placed our security in our accounts rather than in You — the One who owns the silver, the gold, and everything in between.

Father, renew our minds this week. Teach us to open our hands rather than close our fists. Give us the wisdom to manage faithfully, the courage to give generously, and the humility to remember that everything we steward ultimately belongs to You.

May we be men and women who one day hear those words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Not because we were perfect, but because we were purposeful — handling Your resources with integrity, directing them toward Your glory, and trusting You with the outcome.

Everything is Yours, Lord. Teach us to live like we believe it.

Amen.
