• THE LESSON
Where You Invest Reveals What You Believe
Jesus reminds us that what we value most reveals where our heart truly rests. In Matthew 6:19–21, He warns against storing up earthly treasures that decay or can be stolen. Instead, He calls us to invest in heavenly rewards that never fade.
Luke 12:33–34 continues this challenge, urging us to give generously and build “unfailing purses” in heaven. When we live generously — trusting God instead of wealth — we declare that our hope is in eternity, not in what we possess.
Ecclesiastes reminds us that all earthly pursuits are fleeting. The rich man in Luke 12:16–20 thought his wealth secured his future, but he was mistaken. Real success isn’t in how much we accumulate — it’s in how faithfully we give, serve, and trust God with what we have.
Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:17–19 that those who are rich should not be arrogant or put their hope in wealth, but in God, “who richly provides us with everything.” True success, from God’s perspective, is using what we have to do good, be generous, and share with others. Every act of generosity, every moment of service, builds lasting treasure in heaven.
As believers, we are not permanent residents here (1 Peter 2:11). Our lives and resources are temporary, but our impact for God’s kingdom is eternal. When we align our giving, serving, and priorities with eternal values, our hearts follow heavenward.
• KEY SCRIPTURES
Matt 6:19–21 | Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. |
Luke 12:33–34 | Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. |
Luke 12:16–20 | The rich man who tore down his barns to build larger ones was told: “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.” Wealth cannot secure your future. |
1 Tim 6:17–19 | Command those who are rich not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth… but to put their hope in God… to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age. |
1 Pet 2:11 | We are foreigners and exiles here. Our lives and resources are temporary; our kingdom impact is eternal. |
• PRACTICAL WAYS TO STORE UP TREASURE IN HEAVEN
Four Actions That Build What Lasts
1 | Give generously to those in need — not as an obligation, but as a declaration that your hope is in God, not in your bank account. |
2 | Serve joyfully in your church or community — your time and effort invested in people is currency in the kingdom of heaven. |
3 | Support gospel work and missionaries — every dollar sent advances the eternal harvest. You cannot go everywhere, but your resources can. |
4 | Trust God to provide rather than fearing lack — generosity is an act of faith that declares God is your source, not your salary. |
We are not permanent residents here. Our lives and resources are temporary — but our impact for God’s kingdom is eternal. Every act of generosity, every moment of service, every dollar directed toward the gospel builds something that cannot rust, decay, or be stolen. The rich man in Luke 12 had full barns and an empty eternity. Don’t make his mistake. The question isn’t how much you have — it’s what you’re doing with it while you still can. Fix your eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. — 2 Corinthians 4:18 |
• REFLECTION
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION
“Where does my money flow — toward earthly security or eternal impact? Let Matthew 6:21 guide your heart and your giving this week.”
✝ CLOSING PRAYER Father, forgive us for the ways we have treated this life as permanent and eternity as distant. We have clutched our resources tightly, spent them on things that fade, and called it wisdom. We have let the fear of not having enough crowd out the joy of giving freely. Lord, shift our perspective. Remind us that we are foreigners and exiles here — that our real home is with You, and that every dollar, every hour, every act of generosity is an investment in a kingdom that will never end. Give us the courage to give generously when it costs us something. Give us the faith to trust You as our provider rather than clinging to what we have accumulated. Let our wallets reflect what we say we believe about eternity. May our treasure reveal our hearts — and may our hearts be fully Yours. Where we have stored up for ourselves, teach us to store up for heaven. Where we have hoarded, teach us to release. Where we have been afraid, replace that fear with the joy of a generous life. Everything we have is Yours. Teach us to use it that way. Amen. |
