Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? (Part 2)

Caught in the Crosshairs

Today’s post might seem obvious when you read it here, sitting in your living room, at the coffee shop, or wherever you are, safe, secure and peaceful. But do you remember when things weren’t so peaceful? What about when you found out you were sick and the doctors weren’t sure you would survive? And then there was the time you were late for work and you ran to your car, only to find you had a flat tire. Too often in these times of crisis, we ask God, “Why are you doing this?” I mean, if He is such a great God, couldn’t He have stopped these bad things from happening? In the heat of the moment, we blame the one who wants to help us instead of the one who wants to destroy us.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.

John 10:10

We must always remember that God is good. He wants our good. The devil is completely evil and wants to destroy anything that is like God. Don’t you remember that he wanted to be God? That is what got him kicked out of heaven. He hates God so much, he wants to destroy anything that reminds him of God and since you were created in the image of God… you are at the top of the list. See, for satan, it’s not so much against you personally. It’s against who you represent. Satan wants to destroy Christ in you before He has a chance to impact the kingdom of darkness through you.

In the last post, (see “Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? Part 1) I said that there is a war going on for your affections and attention. Satan’s goal is to get you to hate God so you will reject His image and nature. His objective ultimately is not you, it is God in you. If he can get you to reject God, great! Then you will do the will of Satan. If that doesn’t work, he will try to kill you, derail you, slow you down, wear you out and make you give up.

When all hell seems to breaking lose in your life, don’t forget who your enemy is. Don’t give the devil the satisfaction of seeing you turn and shake your fist at God. Don’t reject the One in whose image you are made. Stand up and press on. Fight the urge to blame God and thank Him instead. Thank Him because ultimately, if we remain faithful and steadfast to the end, He will triumph over the enemy and restore what the devil has stolen.
